The Edge for May 2018
Any workday can get stressful. That is no secret. But how we manage the stress, well, that is more complicated. We asked some New Jersey Chamber of Commerce members to share their methods for dealing with workday pressures, and for unwinding at the end of a hectic day.
Chess Refreshes My Mind
I play chess on my phone. I do puzzles, which are partial chess games, in the morning and at night. A daily puzzle in the morning gets me thinking. It gets my brain started. At the end of the day, the games focus my mind away from whatever it is during the day that has me worried. It replaces the clutter and refreshes my mind.

A Snippet of Mental Peace
I use a meditation app on my phone. It’s called Calm. You can open it up and hear soothing sounds. You can set it up to send you calming messages throughout the day. You can also use it to meditate. By pausing your work routine, even if just for a moment, it creates a snippet of mental peace. You go back to work feeling energized.

The Theater Is an Escape
The arts are my passion. When I see a show, opera or ballet, it takes my mind off everything. It’s an escape. We have a saying here at the State Theater: ‘The power of live.’ There is nothing like it.

Horse Riding Gets You ‘Outside Your Regular Life’
I ride horses at a small farm near Allaire State Park. It’s a different world. Nothing bothers you. Nothing hurts you. You are in the moment with the animal. I try to get out there a couple of times a week for half-hour rides. When riding, it’s relaxing. When you are competing, you are forced to get outside your regular life.
